The Dark NIGHTs: the Star Cast of Networking Events

The Dark NightsEver heard the phrase, “it’s not what you know, it’s who you know?”

Yeah…hate to break it to you, but so has everybody else.

Unfortunately, many networking events host a gloomy, completely predictable cast of characters:

The Swiper – Much time can be spent dodging the ever-stealthy business card thief, the person who won’t speak two words to you but manages to leave with your business card with your email address, ready to spam you into oblivion. Read more…

NegativiTEASE

A bona fide bookworm growing up, I tended to be a slightly over-achieving (somewhat brown-nosing) teachers pet. In class, I’d be the first one to raise my hand if I knew an answer, or offer to feed the pet goldfish, or take part in the spelling bee.

Yet every once in a great while, I would get a teacher who couldn’t stand me – perhaps it was the remnant sugar rush from class after lunch hour. But she thought I was the biggest slacker, and she’d switch my seat around so I didn’t talk so much. Seemingly to fulfill her low expectations, I actually found myself being late to class, missing assignments and doing poorly on exams. Read more…

Genderly Speaking – Male vs Female Office Language

Genderly SpeakingI recently had the pleasure of seeing Cindy Krosky, President of Achieving Corporate Excellence, Inc., speak at a chamber meeting. The presentation was suitably titled, “What I Said…Is NOT What you Heard!”

Clash of ‘the Titans’ – Who Inspires You?

No, not the name of the hockey team Sarah Palin and company so loyally support.

In the universal archetypes of literacy, there is always a hero and a trickster. I hope for everyone’s sake, both McCain and Obama are both heroes in some regard.

There are so many platforms, issues, debates, and loaded questions. I have to admit this is the first election I have been actually interested in researching in, and fortunately I’ve found that seems to be the trend with a lot of young voters these days. At least with all the chaos comes a sense of obligatory research, pride in one’s beliefs and genuine attempt to pick someone who will do what is best for them. I mean, best for the country moving forward, right?

Minute Muse Flitters (and Twitters) Into 21th Century…

Minute Muse – although she exemplifies an inspirational yet archaic symbol, the Muse has finally flittered (and twittered) her way into the 21th Century.

I started the Minute Muse site a few months ago as not only a creative outlet for myself, but also as a funnel for the increasingly amount of personal emails I’d receive for quick random ideas and pleas for creative “dream job”-seeking tips. (Yes, there is a difference!) So, I thought a question-and-answer site with a promised turnaround time was a good idea. We’ll see if it gains any momentum with my new emergence into the blog world! You can also follow me on Twitter (MinuteMuse). Read more…
